SEPTEMBER

September 2026 OLMC Newsletter

Dear Our Lady of Mount Carmel Families,

Happy Friday!

We have had a wonderful start to the school year at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It has truly been a blessing to welcome our students into their classrooms and into our safe, caring, and faith-filled community.

This year, our division theme is "Rooted in Joy." Together, we will reflect on how we can be rooted in Christ's love, find joy in our daily lives, and share that joy with others through our words, actions, and faith.

We are excited to begin this journey with your family and look forward to all the learning, growth, and faith-filled experiences the year will bring.

This year, we will continue to send out monthly newsletters to help keep everyone connected and informed. At the end of each newsletter, you will find upcoming events. Please make sure to check our school online calendar for a more complete list noting that changes may take place.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership. We are grateful for the opportunity to work together in nurturing the academic, spiritual, social, and emotional growth of your children. We look forward to a wonderful year filled with learning, faith, and joy.

Blessings,

Mr. Korassa, Mrs. Merhej, & Mrs. Kenney

Toonies for Terry

The 2026 Terry Fox School Run is just around the corner, and we are very excited to be part of this incredible event. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the fight against cancer while empowering our students to become compassionate changemakers in our community.

Our Terry Fox School Run will take place on: September 18th at 2:00PM

Our school's fundraising goal is: $1000

Our school's online fundraising page is: https://schools.terryfox.ca/136333

Here’s how to help your child make their impact:

1. Donate online Or Bring Cash to the School:

·         Click the link above to donate or go to “Find a School” at terryfoxschoolrun.org

·         You can make a general donation to the school or donate to a student or classroom page under the school link.

·         Receipts are emailed immediately to online donors from the Terry Fox Foundation.

·         Double Your Donation! Many Canadian employers match employee donations. During the online donation process, there is an option to enter your employer’s name to see if they participate. If eligible, your employer will be notified and invited to match your donation. Please note: employer matching donations will not appear on your school’s online fundraising page as matching funds are processed and transferred to the Terry Fox Foundation separately. These funds are however added to your school’s overall fundraising total once they are received later.

We encourage every family to get involved by fundraising, donating and cheering on our students. Every donation, big or small, helps fund life-saving cancer research and carries forward Terry’s dream of a world without cancer. Together we can make a difference and Finish It!

Picture Day

School pictures will take place on September 14th, first thing in the morning at 9:00 a.m. starting with our Kindergarten class. Classes will be called down one at a time. After pictures are taken, LifeTouch will send proof pictures to the school and you will be able to order directly on the LifeTouch website. Detailed ordering instructions will be included with the proof package. Please do not send money for pictures to school; it will be returned.

Lockdown and Fire Drills

The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Throughout the school year, we conduct both lockdown drills and fire drills to help ensure that everyone is prepared to respond appropriately in the event of an emergency.

A lockdown drill helps students and staff practice procedures that may be required during a security-related emergency. During a lockdown, classroom doors are locked, lights are turned off, and students and staff remain quiet and safely secured in their classrooms until the all-clear is given.

Fire drills provide students and staff with an opportunity to practice safely and efficiently evacuating the building in the event of a fire or other situation requiring evacuation.

These drills are completed in a calm, orderly manner and are designed to build confidence, preparedness, and awareness. We appreciate the cooperation of our students and staff as we continue to practice these important safety procedures throughout the school year.

Standards of Student Dress

Along with the Student Code of Conduct found at the front of your child’s agenda, we ask that all parents take a moment to review our Standards of Student Dress at OLMC. These expectations are in place to ensure all students are dressed appropriately for school and to help us create a safe, caring, and respectful environment for everyone.

Community Walk Field Trip Form

Your child brought home a field trip form to sign yesterday that we ask are returned to their homeroom teachers by Friday, September 11th. This form will permit students to walk with their classes through the Queen Alexandra Community and will include our walks to St. Anthony Parish for masses throughout the school year.

We are only sending the parent consent form to be signed. Please read the parent information portion of the field trip form carefully, which contains detailed information about the field trip. Please return the signed Parent Consent page by September 11th .

School Fees

School fees will be available September 15th in your parent PowerSchool account. We ask that all families check that their login works before the 15th. If you have any difficulties logging into PowerSchool, please contact Mrs. Kenney in the Main Office at 780-433-1062.

Student Pick Up/Drop Off

We have quite a few yellow buses that will be parking along 77 Avenue on the south lane. We ask that families please keep the bus loading zone clear. This is a City of Edmonton bylaw zone, to avoid a ticket, please use the north side of 77 Avenue or the visitor lot at the front of the school on 76 Avenue. The staff parking lot is not available for drop off/pick up, please do not enter this lot as children may be walking in this area.

** This is an important reminder that students must be picked up by 3:15PM at the latest on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Friday and 12:10PM on Thursdays. **

All late arrivals and pickups will take place at the office.

We would like to welcome The Centre for Early Learning and Development to OLMC.

The Centre for Early Learning and Development is a unique preschool for three and four years old. It is a Reggio Emilia inspired, STEM focused non-profit program guided by Alberta’s Flight Framework. We believe every child is capable, competent and curious and that learning emerges through inquiry, relationships and exploration.

We invite your child to become part of this incredible experience.
